Abstract
891,417. Laminates. KALLE & CO. A.G. Sept. 18, 1959 [Sept. 20, 1958 ; Aug. 29, 1959], No. 31952/59. Class 140. Films of polythene, polypropylene, or copolymers of the monomers of these with each other, are laminated with base films or fabrics of polyesters, such as polyethylene terephthalate or polycarbonates, or polyvinylidene chloride, polyamides, cellulose esters or aluminium foil, by superficially oxidizing the surface of the polyethylene &c. surface to be bonded by known methods, applying a thin coating of a solution of a di- or poly-isocyanate such as toluylene diisocyanate or a condensation product thereof with polyalcohols, or the product of the treatment of 1 -chloromethyl-2.4-phenylene diisocyanate with a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, to one and/or the other of the constituent layers, pressing the two together and heating to at least 130‹ C. to melt the polyolefin. The base layer may also be subjected to the oxidizing process and if of polyethylene terephthalate may also be bi-axially stretched and dimensionally stabilized. A polythene &c. film may be bonded to both sides of the base layer or to one side only, the other side having bonded to it a layer of some other material. As shown, a base film or fabric 6, or a film of oxidized polythene &c., is coated with isocyanate material at 1, the coating is dried by infra-red heating units at 2, and the two layers 6<SP>1</SP>, 7 are pressed together between a steel roller 3a and a rubbercovered roller 3b. The laminate is then passed around a heated roller 4, or between infra-red heating plates, and wound up. The laminate, particularly one having a polyolefin layer on each side, may be laterally gripped as by chain tenter mechanism during heating. Oxidization may be carried out by flaming, electric discharges or treatment with chromic acid, chlorine, chlorinated hydrocarbons, nitrous gases, oxygen, ozone, or ultra-violet light. Specifications 688,637, 704,665, 715,914 and U.S.A. Specification 2,668,134 are referred to.
