In a bubble level of the tubular, or, as shown, the capsule type, having a ground contact surface 4 for the bubble 5, the scale comprises either marks on a flexible carrier sheet 7 secured directly to the wall of the level or marks applied directly to the wall from such a carrier by a transfer process. The carrier 7 may be of self-adhesive synthetic resin material having small, or at least homogeneous, shrinking properties and may be coloured to assist in reading the scales or be made of material having low heat conductivity or particular radiation absorbing properties.
