Abstract
891,045. Wells. JERSEY PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO. Dec. 7, 1959 [April 23, 1959], No. 41469/59. Class 85. In well apparatus comprising tubing 11, and a production pipe 55 (Fig. 14) supporting a valve assembly 10 which includes a housing 15, slips 24 slidable on the housing and engageable with a tapered surface 21 on the housing, a port 31 connecting the annulus between the housing and the tubing and the interior of the housing, a spring biased flapper valve 35, packer means 26, 27 below the port, a mandrel 40 slidable within the housing to open the flapper valve, and a spring biased piston 42 integral with the mandrel and working in a chamber 37 supplied with fluid through the port, means are provided for connecting a supply of fluid to the annulus. Production fluid flows through the pipe 55 all the while sufficient pressure is applied to the annulus to cause the mandrel to engage and open the valve 35. The assembly 10 is lowered to the desired location in the tubing by means of a running-in tool 12 having a stinger 50 which holds the valve 35 open and permits production fluid to flow upwardly past the assembly. When at the desired location the tool is jerked upwardly to cause the slips to engage the tubing. Arms 18 of the tool are released from the assembly and the tool is removed, the valve 35 closing. The pipe 55 is connected to the assembly by latch arms (not shown) and the well is completed. A valve 82 (Fig. 14) is set to connect a pump 83 to the annulus so that fluid pressure moves the piston and mandrel downwardly to open the valve 35, a valve 54 (Fig. 6) first equalizing pressure between the well and the interior of the pipe 55. During the downward movement lugs 41 on the mandrel lock the slips. If a valve 54 is not fitted the valve 82 is set to connect the pump to the interior of the pipe 55 and to the annulus. When the internal pipe and annulus pressures equal the well pressure, the valve 82 is moved to connect the pump to the annulus to open the valve 35. The modification shown in Fig. 11 also permits circulation of solvent or hot oil, the valve 82 connecting the pump so that solvent or oil supplied to the annulus passes through a port 66 and check valve 65 and up the pipe 55 until pressure in the mandrel equals well pressure. The pressure difference maintained by the check valve causes the piston 42a to move downwardly to open valve 35. With the valve 35 open the valve 82 is moved to connect the lines 80, 85 so that any decrease in production fluid discharge through a line 79 causes a diaphragm valve 86 to open so that fluid from annulus bleeds through the lines 80, 85 and the valve 35 closes. The bleeding of the annulus may be resultant on increase in well pressure, or on other conditions.
