Abstract

A process is described for producing a copolymer of (a) an olefinically unsaturated monomer and (b) a condensation product of a glycol, a trialkyl adipic acid and maleic acid or anhydride. The unsaturated compound can be styrene, methyl methacrylate or ethyl itaconate. The glycol can be ethylene glycol, 1,3- or 1,4-butylene glycol or hexa- or octa-methylene glycol. The trialkyl adipic acid can be a ,a ,g -or a ,g ,g -trimethyl adipic acid, or a mixture of both. The condensation product is made by heating at a high temperature for some hours and then under a vacuum. It is then mixed with a fibrous support and the monomer and polymerized further at 70 DEG C. in the presence of a peroxide such as benzoyl peroxide, cyclohexyl hydrogen peroxide or cumene hydrogen peroxide, to form a hard, flexible material.
