890,590. Motor vehicle frames. SIMCA-SOC. INDUSTRIELLE DE MECANIQUE ET CARROSSERIE AUTOMOBILE. Jan. 3, 1960 [Jan. 13, 1959], No. 1264/60. Class 79(4). A motor vehicle frame structure comprises a pair of side members 1 which may be of channel section and a front base member 9 having upwardly flared sides 11 (Fig. 5) secured, e.g. by welding, to the upper surfaces of the side members, and strips 12 welded to the base members 9 and side members 1 to define longitudinally extending triangular portions. The base panel may extend to a pair of transverse crossbeams 31 and 32 and a transverse box girder 17 may extend between the members 1. A transmission housing may be formed by a central depression in the floor member 9 and a member 15. At the rear end the frame has the inwardly curved portions 3, straight extensions 4 and a crossbeam 5. A pressformed member 34 is attached to the crossbeam 31 and side portions 3 and has side portions 36 carrying the seats 37 for helical springs, which are accommodated in cut outs 38 in the side members 3. Bolted on cap members 39 accommodate the connections for a pair of spaced rear crossmembers, not shown, for suspending the rear axle. A rear bottom panel, Fig. 2, is secured (not shown in Fig. 1) to the upstanding walls 35 of member 34, to the cross-member 31, to the cross-member 5, to cross-member 33, to the side members 1 and to flanges 42 of member 34 by a peripheral wall 49 of a forwardly opening arcuate recess 48. The flat rear portion 50 of the floor member 43 has a recess 51 for housing a spare wheel. At the front end the frame has inwardly extending portions 6 and forward straight portions 8. Bracket members 18, shown in detail, Fig. 4, are attached to the frame and have seating portions 21 for helical springs, recesses 24 through which the spring extends and holes 25 for mounting shock absorbers. Stiffener and spacer members 26 and 27 are welded on and form pivots for the lower and upper suspension arms, not shown. The rigidity of the brackets 18 is increased by flanged coverplates 28 welded to the brackets and to the frame arms 8. The brackets 18. may also be secured to a cross arch 19 and scuttle 20 which may be pre-united as a separate unit. The transmission arch 15 has a forwardly flared portion 7 secured to the cross arch 19.
