Abstract

Polymers of nuclear-alkoxy-substituted styrenes, which polymers have stereo regular structures, may be prepared by polymerizing alkoxy styrenes in the presence of a catalyst having the formula XnMeR1m wherein M is aluminium, tetravalent titanium, tetravalent tin, tetra- or pentavalent vanadium, trivalent chromium or trivalent iron; X is a halogen; R1 is an alkyl, aryl, alkoxy or carboxylate group; m and n are each at least 1 and m+n is the valency of the metal Me. Preferred alkoxy styrenes are those in which the alkoxy group contains up to 5 carbon atoms, particularly o-methoxy styrene. The catalyst may be ethyl aluminium dichloride, diethyl aluminium chloride or titanium diacetate dichloride. Polymerization may be effected at 0 DEG to -100 DEG C. in the absence or presence of a diluent, e.g. toluene and n-heptane. The products may be hydrogenated in the presence of Raney nickel catalysts and Example 1 describes the hydrogenation of poly-o-methoxystyrene to poly-o-methoxyvinylcyclohexane.
