Abstract
A continuous process for the production of synthetic liquid latex in a closed oxygen-free system comprises feeding metered quantities of ingredients including styrene and/or butadiene to the system mixing and emulsifying and then homogenizing the ingredients, feeding them to a first reaction stage for partial reaction, feeding thence at a predetermined volumetric rate to a second reaction stage, further reacting the ingredients therein, then feeding to a final reaction stage and completing the reaction therein. The ingredients may be mixed and emulsified under predetermined conditions of temperature, pressure and time and may be homogenized at a predetermined pressure. Any inhibitor may be removed from the butadiene before the mixing and emulsifying step while the liquid from the final reaction stage may have any unreacted butadiene and/or styrene removed by vapourization. Specified polymerization recipes are (1) butadiene, styrene, tertiary dodecylmercaptan, potassium myristate, dresinate, water, "Versene" (Registered Trade Mark), ferrous sulphate heptahydrate, sodium silicate and phenylcyclohexane hydroperoxide, (2) butadiene, acrylonitrile, soap flakes, stearic acid, tertiary dodecyl mercaptan, potassium chloride, sodium pyrophosphate, ferric sulphate, hydrogen peroxide and water and (3) styrene, water, potassium myristate, dresinate, potassium persulphate and sodium silicate.
