Abstract

A hydrocarbon isomerization catalyst comprises 0,1-1% palladium or rhodium on a support containing 50-95% silica and the balance alumina, and optionally 10-60% (based on the noble metal) of an iron group metal, particularly nickel or cobalt. The catalyst support is calcined at 524 DEG -593 DEG C. for 1-4 hours and, after impregnation, is activated by reducing with hydrogen at 413 DEG -555 DEG C., purging, oxidizing with free oxygen at 413 DEG -555 DEG C., purging, and again reducing at 400 DEG -524 DEG C. and 28-40 atmospheres. Regeneration may be effected by oxidizing with an oxygen partial pressure above a minimum line given in Fig. 2 (not shown) at 343 DEG -510 DEG C. with less than 15 mm. Hg partial pressure of water followed by reduction at 400 DEG -510 DEG C. Specifications 720,388, 823,010 and 825,353 are referred to.ALSO:A feed comprising n-pentane and/or n-hexane is isomerised by contact with a catalyst containing 0.1%-1% palladium or rhodium supported on an acidic cracking support containing 50%-95% silica and 50%-5% alumina to effect at least 30% conversion at a selectivity of at least 97% at 343 DEG C-421 DEG C., 8-80 atmospheres and with hydrogen to give a hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol ratio of 0.5-5. The catalyst may be promoted by the addition of an iron group metal, particularly nickel or cobalt in an amount of 10%-60% based on the noble metal. The feed should contain less than 3 p.p.m. sulphur and 15% (volume) of cyclopentane or heavier hydrocarbons. The space velocity may be 0.5-10 vol./vol./hr. The catalyst support is preferably calcined at 524 DEG C.-593 DEG C. for 1-4 hours and after impregnation is activated by reducing at 413 DEG C.-555 DEG C. with hydrogen, purging, oxidising with free oxygen at 413 DEG C.-555 DEG C., purging and again reducing at 400 DEG C.-524 DEG C. and 28-40 atmospheres. The catalyst may be regenerated by oxidising with an oxygen partial pressure above the minimum line given in Fig. 2 (not shown) and 343 DEG C.-510 DEG C. with less than 15 mm. Hg. water partial pressure and reducing at 400 DEG C.-510 DEG C. Specifications 720,388, 823,010 and 825,353 are referred to.
