Class 17(2) A shank stiffener comprises two or more elongate blade-like parts, such as 2, 3, connected together in end to end relationship and cranked where they meet to permit relative pivotal movement about a horizontal transverse axis and also about the longitudinal axis of the stiffener while providing substantial rigidity under the full weight of the wearer. As shown, the parts 2, 3 have central grooves 22, 24 and interengageable hook-like ends 6, 7 which are cranked at 12, 13. Alternatively, one part may have a projection for engagement in a slot or between two fork-like projections on another part. The insole may have grooves in which the ends of the parts can move, and the latter may be covered with rubber.
