Abstract

888,097. Making tubes and electric conductors; welding by fusion; skelping by rolls or dies. PIRELLI-GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. May 17, 1960 [May 25, 1959], No. 17709/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In apparatus for arc-welding the longitudinal seam of a tube or cable sheath formed by bending metal strip, the welding torch 5 and one or more sets of forming rolls 9 or dies through which the strip 10 passes are mounted on a carriage 2 movable in the direction of the seam, and a device 23, released when the welding arc is extinguished, locks the carriage 2 in the normal welding position. The torch 5 and rolls 12 and 13 are mounted on a sub-carriage 6 movable on the carriage 2 manually or by a piston in a cylinder 8. When the welding current is switched off or the arc is extinguished, a valve 31 is actuated to release the locking device 23 and the capstan 14 on which the welded cable is wound is braked. As the capstan 4 slows to a stop the pull of the strip 10 on the forming rolls 9 and/or a separate power device moves the carriage 2. The subcarriage 6 may be moved so that the torch 5 overlaps the end of the weld. When the capstan 14 is restarted, the carriage 2 is pulled by the strip 10 until an abutment 25 engages an adjustable stop 24 and actuates a limit switch 27. The welding current is thereupon connected up and the arc is struck by a highfrequency current. Subsequently a piston and cylinder arrangement 18 is used to return the carriage 2 to be locked in its normal position by the device 23. In a modification, the forward movement of the carriage is terminated and the arc is struck under the control of a tachometer-generator driven off the tube and having output terminals connected to the welding torch switching mechanism. This generator may also be used to control the release of the locking device 23. Specification 741,303 is referred to.
