Abstract
Solid homopolymers and copolymers of 1-alkenes are made by polymerizing a monomer, or mixture of monomers comprising a major proportion of a 1-alkene in the presence of an inert liquid hydrocarbon, and a finely divided solid polymerization catalyst which is insoluble in the hydrocarbon to form a solid polymer as a solution in the reaction mixture, flashing the solution to separate at least a major proportion of any excess monomer as a vapour from the solution, physically separating the solid polymerization catalyst from the solution, extruding the solution, water quenching the extruded solution to solidify the extrudate, steam stripping the solidified extrudate at subatmospheric pressure to remove residual hydrocarbon medium, and recovering a solid 1-alkene polymer. The solid polymer may be melted and re-extruded. Specified 1-alkenes are ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 1-pentene, 1-heptene, 1-octene, 1-dodecene, 1-tetradecene, 1-hexadecene, and mixtures. The 1-alkenes may also be copolymerized with other monomers such as butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, piperylene, cyclopentadiene, tetrafluoroethylene, or perfluorovinyl chloride. The solid polymerization catalyst is preferably selected from (1) metals or oxides on supports, e.g. nickel on charcoal or chromia on silica-alumina, (2) metal oxides admixed with aluminium trialkyls (3) the reaction product of a metal halide and an organometallic compound, e.g. titanium tetrachloride and an aluminium trialkyl, or (4) a metal halide in a lower valency state and an organometallic compound, e.g. titanium trichloride and an aluminium trialkyl. The Specification contains an extensive list of such catalysts. The exemplified catalyst is a reaction product of sodium metal and molybdenum on alumina. The monomers polymerized are generally purified. The physical separation of the catalyst is generally effected by filtration through a cellulosic sheet. It may also be effected in a centrifuge or hydrocyclone. The monomers flashed, and the solvents obtained during steam-stripping are all recovered, purified, and reused in the process. The whole process is effected continuously and one method of carrying out the process is indicated in a flowsheet diagram. Specification 748,634 is referred to.
