Abstract

The invention comprises 1,2-chromium or cobalt complexes of dyes of formula <FORM:0887867/IV (c)/1> where R is a benzene residue bound to the azo link in o-position to the OH group, R1 is an aryl residue, n is 1-4 and Y is a halogenated 1,3,5-triazine radical and at least one of R and R1 has a sulphonic or carboxylic group. The dyes are made by metallising the metal-free dyes, if necessary by a dealkylating process, or by condensing an appropriate metal complex with the required halo-triazine. A halogen atom of a dihalotriazine product may be replaced by another radical in a subsequent stage. A mixture of dyes of the above formula may be metallised. Preferred are dyes of formula <FORM:0887867/IV (c)/2> where X is SO3H, alkyl or alkoxy of up to 4 carbon atoms, Cl, NO2, acylamino or H, one Z is SO3H or COOH and the other H and Y1 is a mono- or di-chloro-1,3,5-triazine residue bound through an NH group to the benzene residue. Indicated mono-chloro-triazine residues are 2-chloro-4-methyl, -phenyl- or "-R2-" (where R2 is an etherified hydroxyl or mercapto group or a substituted or unsubstituted amino group)-1,3,5-triazines. Representative of compounds from which R2 may be derived are ammonia, alcohols of low molecular weight, phenols, thiophenol, ethylamine, methoxypropylamine, cyclohexylamine, N-methyl-phenyl-amine, dimethylamine, ethanolamines, morpholine, aminocarbonic acid esters, aminoacetic acid ethyl ester, hydrazine, aminoethane sulphonic acids, aminosalicylic acid, aniline mono- and di-sulphonic acids, aminoacetic acid and aminonaphthalene sulphonic acids. Representative of indicated residues for R1 are phenyl, optionally containing carboxy, sulphonic or sulphonamide substituents and naphthyl. The dyes are used to colour cellulosic materials, e.g. regenerated cellulose, cellulose, linen and cotton, preferably using in conjunction with an acid-binding agent. The dyes also colour nitrogenous fibrous materials, e.g. superpolyamides and -urethanes, silk, leather and wool from a weakly acid, neutral or weakly alkaline bath. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring cellulosic materials red, blue, grey, brown and black shades being obtained.
