Abstract

The double bond isomerisation or stereoisomeric conversion of a C4-C6 normal olefine or C5-C6 tertiary olefine is effected in the presence of a 5 pore size synthetic crystalline zeolite; the process may be applied to the separation of isobutene and butene-1 by isomerising at least part of the latter to butene-2 and fractionating A 5 "Linde" (Registered Trade Mark) molecular sieve may be used at 80 DEG C.-260 DEG C., the olefine being in the vapour phase. The zeolite may be reactivated by heating it up to 300 DEG C. under reduced pressure or in the presence of a dry purge gas. The following conversions are exemplified: (1) butene-1 to trans- and some cis-butene-2, (3) cis-butene-2 to trans-butene-2 and some butene-1, (4) trans-butene-2 to cis-butene-2 and some butene-1, (5) butene-1 in a C4 butadiene-free stream to butene-2 followed by fractionation to separate isobutene, (6) 2-methyl-butene-1 to 2-methylbutene-2, (7) 2-methylpentene-1 to 2-methylpentene-2.
