Abstract

A lubricant comprises a blend of a mineral or synthetic lubricating oil with a halogenated polymer of an olefine having in the molecule 6 to 25 carbon atoms, or a sulphohalogenated polymer of such an olefine, or a sulphohalogenated polymer of such an olefine reacted with an amine. For the preparation of the aftertreated olefin polymers (see Group IV(a). The blend may also contain additional additives such as pour point depressors, viscosity index improvers, extreme pressure additives, thickeners, antioxidants, anti-corrosive agents, and anti-lacquering agents. The mineral oil may be a hydrocarbon oil obtained from a paraffinic naphthenic, Mid-Continent, or Coastal Stock, or mixtures thereof. The synthetic oil may be a copolymer of an alkylene glycol or oxide, an organic ester, e.g. di-(2-ethylhexyl)-sebacate, dinonyl sebacate, dinonyl adipate, dioctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, a polymeric p tetrahydrofuran, a polyalkyl silicone polymer, e.g. a dimethyl silicone polymer, or a polymer made by the processes described in Specifications 873,064, 873,067 or 873,068. Specified pour point depressors and viscosity index improvers are polymers of esters of acrylic or 2-alkylacrylic acids such as the methyl, ethyl, m-propyl, isopropyl, isobutyl, lauryl, phenyl, or benzyl esters, or the polymers made in accordance with the processes of Specifications 873,065, and 873,068. The anti-lacquering agent may be a zinc or calcium salt of benzoic acid, naphtheic acid, phenol, alkylated phenols or higher alkylated salicyclic acids. Specified extreme pressure agents are troctyl and tricresyl phosphates. Antioxidants mentioned are 10-benzyl phenothiazine and the mixture comprising this thiazine described in Specification 873,066. Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 810,023, 819,867, 820,263 and 879,506 also are referred to.ALSO:Halogen-containing hydrocarbon polymers are made by polymerizing an olefine, containing at least six but not more than twenty-five carbon atoms, in the presence of a catalyst comprising components A and B, as later defined, in a mole ratio of component B to component A of 1:1 or more, and reacting the hydrocarbon polymer with a halogenating or sulphohalogenating agent. By component A is meant a compound selected from compounds of a metal of Group 4a, 5a, 6a, or 7a of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table or a compound of iron. By component B is meant a compound or element of either of the following groups: (1) a Group 1, 2, or 3 metal or alloy, or (2) an organo-metallic compound or a hydride of a Group 1, 2, or 3 metal, or tin, or lead. The olefine is preferably purified by treatment with urea and, if desired, further purified by treatment with silica-gel. The olefine may be obtained by the thermal or catalytic cracking of hydrocarbon feedstock or by the cracking of the raffinate obtained by the selective solvent extraction of heavy catalytically cracked cycle oil. The polymer may be contacted with the halogenating or sulphohalogenating agent before or after the removal of catalytic residues from the polymer. The halogenating agent may be chlorine. The sulphohalogenating agent may be thionyl or sulphuryl chloride, sulphur monochloride, or a mixture of sulphur dioxide and a liquid or gaseous halogen, e.g. chlorine. The sulphohalogenating may be effected in the presence of ultra-violet light, or a small quantity of a heterocyclic nitrogen compound, or an organic solvent or diluent for the polymer. The sulphur- and halogen-containing polymers may be reacted with an amine. The reaction may be effected in bulk, but it is preferably effected in solution, e.g. in toluene, carbon tetrachloride, or an alcohol or phenol. The Specification contains numerous examples of suitable amines, alcohols and phenols. The hydrocarbon polymers, the halogenated and sulphohalogenated polymers, and amine-treated halogenated and sulphohalogenated polymers are all isolated by conventional techniques.
