Abstract
A polyvinyl chloride mixture containing a softener and an expander and which is able to remain sufficiently liquid to absorb the air in the mould cavity is placed in a mould to fill 10% to 60% of its volume and the mixture foamed up in a one stage process, with the mould closed so that a pressure below 10 atmospheres is set up, and gelatinized at this pressure and at an elevated temperature. Gelatinization is retarded by using softeners which gelatinize at higher temperatures than di-octyl phthalate and/or by using a high temperature gelatinizing polyvinyl chloride and/or by using expanders having different decomposition points or ranges. Suitable softeners are di-monyl- and di iso decyl-phthalate and polymers of butadiene-acrylonitrile and adipic acid polyester; retarders are octyl stearate and dibenzyl toluene, whilst expanders are ammonium carbonate and bicarbonate, and sulph hydrazides.ALSO:A polyvinyl chloride mixture containing a softener and an expander and which is able to remain sufficiently liquid to absorb the air in the mould cavity is placed in a mould to fill 10% to 60% of its volume and the mixture foamed up in a one stage process, with the mould closed so that a pressure below 10 atmospheres is set up, and gelatinized at this pressure and at an elevated temperature.
