Abstract
886,300. Electric selective signalling systems. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. Oct. 26, 1960 [Nov. 2, 1959], No. 36817/60. Class 40 (1). A system for measuring both the extent and direction of relative displacement of two members of the type in which a uniformly coded scale on one of the members is sensed by two phase-displaced heads on the other member is characterized in that the true outputs of the two heads are inverted, the true outputs and the inverted outputs are differentiated, and all these eight signals are applied to a gating circuit to provide a train of pulses representing the extent of displacement on one of two leads representing the direction of displacement. As described the outputs MX1, MX2, Figs. 2, 3, of two heads HMX1, HMX2 are inverted to give signals M1, M1 and M2, M2, and these four signals are differentiated to give signals d(M1) &c. These signals are then applied to And gates 13-16 and 19-22 and Or gates 17 and 23 to give a train of pulses from one of two amplifiers 18 and 24 depending upon the direction of the relative displacement of the scale and heads. The arrangements of gates is such that for each graduation of the scale four uniformly spaced pulses are produced.
