In a machine for automatically severing sections of equal length from a bar/or tube by advancing it through clamping means 2, 3 and past a saw 6 or other cutting means up to an adjustable stop 4, a short initial length is cut off first to clean up the face of the first section and the last section of the bar or tube, which is too short to be gripped by the clamps, is ejected by the next following bar 1<SP>1</SP> without contacting the stop. As the bar 1 reaches the stop 4, the stop yields slightly and closes a switch 5 so that clamps 2, 3 close, feed rollers 7-11 are stopped and the saw 6 cuts off a section. When the saw is withdrawn, the clamps open and feed rollers are driven again to repeat the severing process. Forward motion of the bar drives a roller 12 connected by a slipping clutch 14 to cam rings 21, 22 which are prevented from rotating by a locking fin 15 until the end of the bar clears an arm 17 and closes a switch 18. The switch 18 causes the pin 15 to be withdrawn and releases the lowermost bar 1<SP>1</SP> of a pile of bars to the rollers 10, 11 where the bar closes a switch 20 that prevents further bars from being released, for the time being. The rollers 10, 11 advance the bar 1<SP>1</SP> until it contacts bar 1 and closes switch 18 so that the locking pin 15 is released ready to stop the cams 21, 22 after one revolution. The cam rings control tappets 23, 24 operating switches 25, 26 and 27 and the first action is to close the switch 25 so that the speed of advance of the bar 1 is reduced. At a later stage, shown in Fig. 11, the displacement of tappet 24 closes switch 27 and stop 4 is raised out of the path of the last short section of the bar which is then ejected. Thereafter switch 27 re-opens and switch 26 is closed by a second rise on cam 21 to cause the clamps to grip bar 1<SP>1</SP> before it contacts the stop 4 and ensure that only a short section is cut initially. Finally, switches 25 and 26 re-open and the projection 16 on disc 14 is then in engagement with the locking pin 15.
