Abstract

<PICT:0885214/III/1> Optical elements such as glass plates 11 are coated with a solution of a plastic material, such as polyvinyl formal or butyral, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polybutylmethacrylate, cellulose acetate or cellulose nitrate, which may contain plasticizers and dyes, by pouring the solution on to the plate while supported on a spinning table 29, for example of cruciform shape having retaining studs 31, and spinning the table as by an electric motor 23 and belt and shaft drive 24, 22, while drawing air over and around the plate to carry away droplets thrown off, the air guiding and moving means comprising a dished baffle plate 15, rotating with the table 29 and having central holes 32 through which air is drawn beneath the plate 11 by vanes 34 on the shaft 22, and an exhaust blower 16 communicating with the casing 17 containing the apparatus. After drying additional coatings may be similarly applied.
