Abstract

A shell or casing for an artificial limb is made from a number of overlapped layers of woven glass fabric, each coated with polyester resin. A former, made of wood in sections to allow easy removal, is given a first coating of suitable liquid, to prevent the resin adhering to it, and is then given a coating of resin. The first layer of glass fabric is then wrapped around the former with its ends overlapping. This is covered with a further application of resin and another layer of fabric, and this is repeated until the desired thickness has been built up. The overlapped portions of different layers are spaced from each other around the former to assist in maintaining a uniform thickness and, to give added strength, the threads of each layer are placed at an angle to those of adjacent layers. Extra thickness may be built up at the ends of the shell to provide the strength required for the attachment of any necessary fittings.ALSO:A shell or casing for an artificial limb comprises a number of layers of woven glass fabric, each coated with polyester resin. The first layer of glass fabric is then wrapped round the former with its ends overlapping. A further coating of resin is applied to this and is followed by another layer of fabric. Overlapped portions of different layers are spaced from each other around the former to assist in maintaining a uniform thickness and, to give added strength, the threads of each layer are placed at an angle to those of the adjacent layers. Extra thickness may be built up at the ends of the shell to provide the strength necessary for the attachment of any necessary fittings.
