Abstract

884,983. Skittles. BRUNSWICK-BALKECOLLENDER CO. Feb. 9, 1960 [March 9, 1959; Nov. 20, 1959], No. 4522/60. Class 132(2) A skittle consists of a hollow metal, e.g. magnesium, shell containing sound-controlling means and having a wear-resistant coating, the shell being thickest at the belly of the skittle to minimize damage. As shown in Fig. 1, the shell 1 is provided with an internal annular thickening 15 at the belly, is coated with an ethyl cellulose gel or nylon coating 2 and contains, in its body, a mass 4 of flexible polyurethane foam and, in its head, a mass 21 of rigid polyurethane foam. The skittle has a base 5 of nylon or polycarbonate. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the head of the skittle is empty and the mass 4 is enclosed in an envelope of plastic. In a further modification a solid synthetic plastic layer is disposed between the shell and the mass 4. As shown in Fig. 6 the belly of shell 1 is crossbraced by three arms 31 and a central body 30. In further modifications, a diagonal brace spans the body part of the shell, or the shell has a single internal radial projection at the belly, or the shell wall is not of uniform thickness so that it is unbalanced.
