Abstract

Polymeric phosphorus-containing products are obtained from a tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium (THP) salt, tris (hydroxymethyl) phosphine oxide or a derivative thereof containing at least two hydroxmethyl groups directly attached to phosphorus and a nitrogen-containing polyfunctional organic compound capable of reacting with formaldehyde. The polymeric material may be produced in situ on textile material which has already been treated with an aminoplast resin or precursors thereof, by applying to the textile a solution containing the THP salt and an amine aldehyde precondensate such as trimethylol melamine or dimethylol urea and drying and heat curing. The polymers may be produced as in Specification 764,314, 821,504 or 882,993. In examples THP chloride, trietyanolamine, urea, and either methylated trimethylol melamine precondensate with or without methylol stearamide or a urea-formaldehyde precondensate are mixed together in water. Specifications 740,269 and 761,985 also are referred to.
