Abstract

884,492. Spinning and finishing yarns. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS Ltd. June 1, 1960 [June 16, 1959], No. 20601/59. Class 120(3) [Also in Group XI] Synthetic, e.g. nylon, yarn is wound on to a rotatable bobbin or flangeless tube which is driven by contact along its wound length with a roll the surface of which is heated to impart a required heat-treatment to the yarn by contact therewith as it approaches the roll and is wound thereby. The heat-treatment may be applied concurrently with winding, twisting, falsetwisting, crimping or overfeeding to permit controlled contraction of the yarn in order to modify its stretch and/or bulk properties prior to dyeing or knitting. In a twist-crimp process, yarn 1 drawn from supply by roll 3 passes through a heater 11 and belt(15)-driven twisttube 13 and is forwarded at a controlled (20%) overfeed by roller 7 to be wound into a package 23 (or a plurality thereof) by a heated winding roll 17 and reciprocating arm 19 and guide 21 of a traverse mechanism. The roll 17 may have a surface of electric resistance metal heated by passage of current therethrough or, as shown in Fig. 2, it is heated by a tubular, coiled resistance heater 41 connected to a supply through leads 43, brushes 45 and slip-rings 29.
