Abstract

884,422. Tilting tripod heads. KARPF, N., [trading as LINHOP, N. KARPF-KOMM.- GES.]. Nov. 25, 1958 [Nov. 29, 1957], No. 37886/58. Class 97(1). In a tripod head for supporting cameras and other instruments, having a camera supporting part pivotally connected to a lower part adapted to be connected to the tripod proper, the arrangement being such that the camera supporting part is able to rotate in a horizontal plane when the lower part is connected to an upright tripod there are provided a first locking means for locking the camera supporting part against movement relative to the lower part, a handle for moving the camera supporting part pivotally and rotatably, and means for articulating the handle to the camera supporting part for universal movemeni relatively to the camera supporting part whereby the handle can be swung to a convenient operating position relative to the camera supporting part, the means for articulating the handle comprising a ball-and-socket connection, this connection being adapted to comprise a second locking means for locking the handle against movement relative to the camera supporting part. As shown in Figs. 7 and 8, a socket 21 is mounted directly on the camera supporting part 20 of the head and engages a ball 23 carried by the handle 19. The ball-and-socket are clamped by turning a wing nut 26 which forces the two sides 25 of the socket together. Clamping of the camera supporting part to the lower part is effected by screwing the handle 19 into the sleeve 27, thus forcing a bolt 28 into a tapered groove 30 in the lower part 31 of the head. So that the handle can be operated from the left or right sides, the connecting piece 21 may be unscrewed and replaced in hole 32. In a modification (Figs. 3-6, not shown) the ball is mounted at the end of a horizontal shaft about which the camera supporting part rotates, and is rigidly fixed thereto. The handle carries a socket engaging the ball and can be clamped thereto by rotating the handle about its axis. In a further modification (Fig. 10, not shown) the socket is carried by the camera supporting part and the ball is split into two halves which may be forced apart by threaded wedge pieces thereby locking the ball-and-socket connection on rotation of the handle.
