Abstract
883,554. Controlling vehicles. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 20, 1959 [April 11, 1958], No. 9739/59. Class 79(5). In a power operated control system for a motor road vehicle, the steering, acceleration and deceleration are controlled from a single rod capable of angular movement in any direction. The control rod 14 is attached to a cross shaft 20 pivoted in a gimbal 12 pivoted about a longitudinal axis 24. Potentiometers 28 and 30 operate mechanisms controlling the brakes and accelerator respectively in response to rearward or forward pivotal movement respectively of the lever and a potentiometer 32 operated by pivotal movement of the gimbal controls the steering. A heavy mass 26 attached to the lever 14 tends by centrifugal force to turn the vehicle in a direction opposite to that in which it is being turned. The control lever 14 and gimbal may be damped. The mechanisms operating the throttle, brakes and steering gear may be servo units. The steering potentiometer 32 may be connected with a closed loop servo positioning system which includes a summing amplifier 36, servo unit 38, steering system 40 and feedback pick-up 42 connected to the pitman arm of the steering gear and feeds back a signal proportional to the displacement of the wheels. The movement of the wheels to an extent and direction determined by the signal from the potentiometer 32 continues until the output of the pick-up 42, as fed back into the summing amplifier 36, equals the output of the variable gain amplifier 34. A pick-up 44, operated from a transmission output shaft to develop a signal inversely proportional to the speed of the engine, may be included to feed a signal into the variable gain amplifier 34 and also into a summing amplifier 46 in the throttle servo system. An emergency steering system 48, in which the power steering motor operates the wheels directly in response to the signal from the potentiometer 32, may be provided and may be manually or automatically switched on.
