Abstract

883,376. High vacuum apparatus. BALZERS AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT FUER HOCHVAKUUMTECHNIK UND DUNNE SCHICHTEN. March 30, 1960 [April 7, 1959], No. 11186/60. Class 8(1). In a method of operating a high vacuum plant comprising a bell 2 into which articles tc be treated under vacuum are introduced and from which they are subsequently withdrawn, dry gas e.g., air is constantly blown through the bell, 2 whilst the latter is connected to atmosphere thereby preventing condensation of moisture on the inner wall of the bell during a subsequent evacuation period. In operation and assuming a vent valve 18 to be open and the bell to have been raised by a jack 7 from a seat 6, articles to be treated are introduced therein through resilient flaps 12, 13 of a surrounding flexible casing 9 having a restricted vent 19, and dry air is forced by a blower 14 through a drier 15 in to the space 17 between the bell 2 and casing 9 and thence in to the bell space 1. The bell is then lowered on to its supporting table 3, the valve 18 closed and the space 1 evacuated through a port 4 leading to a vacuum pump 5. In a modification any gas e.g., nitrogen is introduced directly in to the bell space and in a further modification only that portion near the open end of the bell is surrounded by the flexible casing.
