Abstract

883,373. Direct lift jet propelled aircraft. DAIMLER-BENZ A. G. Jan. 13, 1960 [Jan. 17, 1959], No. 1284/60. Class 4. [Also in. Group XXVI]. An afterburner 12 is pivotable about an axis 24 on a gas turbine unit 11, between a position 12 (shown in full lines) in which it discharges into a supersonic horizontal propulsion nozzle 13, and a position 12<SP>1</SP> (shown in broken lines) in which it discharges in to a subsonic nozzle 14, to provide direct lift for the aircraft in which it is installed. The axis 18 of nozzle 13 is inclined at an angle a to the axis 19 of the afterburner in one extreme position, and the axis 20 of nozzle 14 is inclined at a greater angle b to the axis 19<SP>1</SP> of the afterburner in the other extreme position. In intermediate positions, the afterburner discharges partly into each nozzle, nozzle 14 being divided by deflecting plates 17. Pivot 26 is hollow, and provides a fuel lead for the afterburner fuel injector 22. The afterburner pivots within a fixed casing 21 through which cooling air may flow.
