882,875. Producing glass fibre-reinforced nylon moulding granules. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 10, 1960 [Sept. 23, 1959], No. 32356/59. Class 87(2). Glass fibre-reinforced moulding granules are produced by extruding nylon over at least one continuous strand of glass fibres and converting the extrudate into granules by making a plurality of transverse cuts, the extrudate being fed between a solid surface and a rotating toothed roller whereby it is subjected at spaced intervals along its length to a pinching action which deforms the nylon coating sufficiently to cause the glass fibres to be gripped within the granules. A combined pinching and cutting action may be obtained using the apparatus of Fig. 1 in which the extrudate 1 is fed by urger rolls 2, 3 to an anvil 6 over which a toothed wheel 4 rotates in an anticlockwise manner with its teeth 5 having a close working clearance with the surface of the anvil 6. Alternatively the extrudate may be pinched and cut in separate operations as shown in Fig. 2, being passed between pairs of contra-rotating rollers 2, 3 and 4, 5, one of each pair of rollers being toothed and one smooth, so that indentations lying directly opposite each other are made on opposite sides of the extrudate. A rotary cutter 7 cuts the extrudate at each indentation or, if granules of more elongated shape are desired, at for example every second, third or fourth indentation. Preferably, the extrudate is quenched and cooled to substantially room temperature before the pinching action is applied but the pinching action may, if desired, be applied to the quenched extrudate before it has cooled to room temperature. The granules are suitable for conversion in to shaped articles by injection moulding, which articles are characterised by a high rigidity at elevated temperatures. Articles of optimum tensile and impact strength are obtained when the glass fibre content is between 5% and 40% by weight of the granules.
