Abstract

882,442. Dielectric heating. RADYNE Ltd. Nov. 11, 1959 [Aug. 11, 1958], No. 38270/59. Divided out of 882,441. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XL(b)] A duct for passage of material to be heated in a radio-frequency oven operating at a frequency of less than 500 mc/s., comprises electricallyresistive means for absorbing stray radiation, particularly harmonics. The resistances may be in the form of strips or rods or may comprise panels 29 extending from the narrow sides of the duct. The panels may be made from boards of asbestos, wood, cardboard, concrete, foam rubber &c., painted with a solution of colloidal graphite, or from a mixture of powdered graphite and cement. They are attached to the walls of the duct by conductive brackets. The panels may be arranged to extend from all four walls of the duct to define a rectangular central passage for material to be heated. This passage may be lined by resistive panels to form an inner duct 40, Fig. 6. A series of resistive ducts may be arranged one within another and the space between them filled with e.g. foam polystyrene. The outer metal shell may be omitted. The duct may be provided with a quarter-wave extension for suppression of a particular frequency or two or more resistive ducts may be connected by such quarter-wave sections. The conveyer may be of insulating material. If a metal conveyer is used it must be conductively or capacitatively coupled to the resistive panels.
