Abstract

A dyed silica is prepared in Example 3 as follows: colloidal silica solution is added to an aqueous alkaline solution of beta-phenylethyl polysiloxane, heated at 100 DEG C. for half an hour, and water is added. A solution of a triaryl methane siloxane dyestuff (see Group IV(a)) in aqueous hydrochloric acid is added, followed by further acid, forming a green gel, which is washed, filtered and dried.ALSO:The invention comprises silicon-containing triaryl-methane dyestuffs containing one or more cations of the formula <FORM:0882065/IV (a)/1> or <FORM:0882065/IV (a)/2> and their corresponding siloxanes, wherein X1 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical or a -CaH2a Si V3 radical, V is an alkyl radical, a is at least 3, Ar2 is a phenylene radical which may be substituted by alkyl or alkoxy groups, Ar3 is a phenyl radical which may be substituted, Ar4 is a phenylene radical, R is hydrogen, alkyl or alkoxy, and R11 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, the cations being in union with chloride or sulphate ions. The compounds of formula I are prepared by reacting an arylaminoalkylsilane with an arylaldehyde in the presence of a condensation catalyst supplying chloride or sulphate ions, e.g. ZnCl2, HCl, H2SO4, to form the leuco triarylmethane dyestuff which is isolated and oxidized, e.g. with lead peroxide. The compounds of formula II are prepared by reacting arylaminoalkylsilanes with a 4,41-diaminodiarylketone in the presence of a condensation agent such as phosphorus oxychloride. The arylaminoalkylsilanes are described in Specification 882,052. When they contain hydrolysable groups, the siloxanes are formed. Examples are given. Apart from their use as dyes, the polymeric compounds are suitable as pigments and as constituents of inks, e.g. a siloxane triphenylmethane dyestuff is dissolved in glycerine and the solution added to water to form an ink.
