Abstract

Copolycarbonates, free from a tendency to crystallize, are made by adding phosgene and resorcinol or hydroquinone to a solution of a (4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl)-alkane in an inert solvent and reacting the substances in the presence of an acid-binding agent; the fraction of the total amount of the phosgene which has been added at any given time during the addition being approximately the same as the fraction of the total amount of the resorcinol or hydroquinone which has been added. Preferably reaction is effected in the presence of an antioxidant (e.g. sodium hydrosulphite, potassium sulphite or sodium- or potassium sulphide). The inert solvent may be benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, methylcylohexane, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, methyl acetate or methylene chloride and the acid-binding agent may be pyridine or an aqueous solution of lithium-, sodium-, potassium- or calcium hydroxide. At the end of the addition, a quaternary ammonium compound is added and the reaction mixture stirred to effect further polymerization. Then the polymer solution is washed with water, neutralized with acid, rewashed with water, coagulated with ethanol and finally filtered and dried. In examples, the (4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl)-alkane used is bisphenol-A. Specification 772,627 is referred to.
