Abstract

881,764. Clutch control. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Dec. 2, 1958 [Dec. 24, 1957], No. 38881/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups XXVII and XXIX] An hydraulically-operated friction clutch in the drive of a fan 1 of an engine cooling system is engaged above a predetermined engine temperature. The clutch comprises a friction ring 10 rotating with a driving pulley 5 and secured to a diaphragm 12 which acts as a spring disengaging the ring from a driven friction face 4<SP>1</SP>. The driving pulley is keyed to a shaft 2 rotating in a journal 6 and driving the pump of the engine coolant system. Oil from the engine lubrication system is fed through a line 17 to a passage 6a in the journal and thence through a bore 18 to a chamber 15 behind the diaphragm. A return line 19 to the sump is closed by a thermostatic valve 20 when the temperature of the engine coolant is above a predetermined value so that the pressure in chamber 15 engages the clutch, and is opened at a lower temperature to disengage the fan drive. The valve 20 comprises a ball 25 and a bimetallic washer 23 which is in the position illustrated when the engine is cold so that the ball opens an orifice 26; when the engine temperature reaches the desired value the curvature of the washer 23 reverses and ball 25 is pushed upwards to close the orifice 26.
