Abstract

881,684. Extrusion apparatus. BURGESS ENGINEERING STOKE-ON-TRENT Ltd. July 21, 1960 [Nov. 10, 1959], No. 38017/59. Class 87(2). Apparatus for extruding plastic material such as dough in strip form comprises a driven feed roller 12 in contact with the material 14 in a container 10, a driven pinning roller 16 located below and to one side of feed roller 12 for assisting in the feed and for determining the thickness of the strip to be extruded, and a delivery roller 13 of larger diameter than rollers 12, 16 which is located below roller 12 for delivering the extruded strip, the ratio of the rate of rotation of the delivery roller 13 relative to that of the feed roller 12 being 1À316, the diameters of rollers 12, 13 having a like relationship. The feed roller 12 has a fluted surface while the other rollers are smooth-surfaced. The pinning roller 16, which is of the same diameter, and driven at the same speed but in the opposite direction as roller 12, is mounted between a pair of arms 15 pivotally mounted on standard 111 coaxial with the axis of feed roller 12. These pivotal arms 15 are in turn pivoted to the upper ends of rods 17 having eyed lower ends mounted on eccentrics 181 carried by a transverse shaft 18, the turning of which by a handwheel (not shown) varies the throw of the eccentrics 181 and hence the spacing of the peripheries of the delivery roller 13 and the pinning roller 16 and the thickness of the extruded strip. As the feed roller 12 rotates anticlockwise and in the opposite direction to the pinning roller 16, material 14 is drawn from the container 10 and forced into the space A in a state of compression. From this space, the material is extruded through the gap between the peripheries of the delivery roller 13 and the pinning roller 16 and is carried on the periphery of the latter until, e.g. in the case of dough, it falls into baking tins 34 supported on the upper surface of a chain driven conveyer. Transversely arranged knives 32, 33 strip any adherent dough from the lower peripheries of rollers 13, 16 respectively. In addition to extruding dough, the apparatus can be used for extruding marzipan, paste, jam or other confectionery fillings in strip form, or in other industries where a plastic material is required to be extruded continuously in an unbroken strip of uniform width and thickness.
