Abstract

Stable vinyl halide polymer films are prepared by extruding, at a temperature not below its melting point, a vinyl halide polymer containing as stabilizer a terpene of molecular formula (C5H8), where x is 2:6, or such a terpene wherein one or more of the hydrogen atoms has been replaced by a hydroxyl or hydrocarbon group or a halogen atom. The stabilizing compound is present in an amount of 1-15% of the total weight of polymer and stabilizer. Specified vinyl halide polymers are homo- and co-polymers of vinyl chloride and fluoride, vinylidene chloride-vinyl chloride co-polymers, and after-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride. Terpene compounds specified are:- beta-caryophyllene, betapinene, pinocarveol, nopadiene, d-limonene, dipentene, myrcene, alpha-pinene, geraniol, camphene, menthene, d,l-merolidol, terpineol, alphafenchene, alloocimene, nopol, pinane, tricyclene, linalool, isoborneol, pinocarvyl chloride, citronellol, eugenol, citral, cedrene and citronella. Optional ingredients mentioned are pigments, dyes, delustrants, plasticizers, latent solvents, fillers, lubricants, other thermal stabilizers and photo-stabilizers. Exemplary compositions incorporate glycol triricinoleate and the butylated hydroxy toluene.
