Abstract

881,406. Laying submarine cables. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Nov. 18, 1957 [Sept. 12, 1956], No. 27947/56. Class 78 (5). In order to relieve the stress which a submarine cable experiences as it passes over a braked pulley on board ship en route into the sea, the pulley is slit (Fig. 4) radially to form the partially-formed sectors shown which yield circumferentially. Alternatively (Fig. 5), the pulley may carry cable-engaging elements 4 restrained by springs 5 secured to pulley 3; or (Fig. 6) may carry cable-engaging elements 7 resiliently biased at 10 and radially restrained at 11; or may carry a plurality of rubber cable-engaging blocks. Specifications 703,782 and 743,862 are referred to.
