Abstract

An image enhancement system for processing input intensity related pixel data to produce similar output data in response to a mapping function. The mapping function consists of an output value for all possible input values and is derived by integrating a logarithmically scaled frequency function. The frequency function represents the number of times each intensity level is present in the input data and the logarithmic scaling results in each addition to a frequency total increasing said total by a diminishing increment. The invention allows mapping functions to be derived from histograms even when a relatively small object of interest is shown against a large background.
