Abstract

881,226. Stereotype casting - machines. WOOD NEWSPAPER MACHINERY CORPORATION. Sept. 4, 1959 [March 27, 1959]. No. 30258/59. Class 100(2) A stereotype casting machine having a casting unit comprising a movable casting core 9 and a box 8 for carrying a matrix, the box and core co-operating to form a vertically extending mould cavity, and a matrix stripping means carried by the box for stripping the matrix from a plate casting, is characterised in that a box moving means is provided for moving the box horizontally to and from a casting position with respect to a matrix stripping position wherein the matrix is completely stripped from a plate casting, and a box tilting means is provided for tilting the casting box about a horizontal axis of the casting unit to facilitate placing a matrix in the box. A space 60, Fig. 2, is provided between the casting box 8 and core 9 in which the matrix, not shown, is positioned while molten metal is poured through a funnel 4. The box 8 is supported by rollers such as 25, engaging tracks such as 26. Cam arm 30<SP>1</SP> , Fig. 4, is secured to a shaft 32<SP>1</SP> on which the roller 25 rotates. A roller 29<SP>1</SP> on the arm 30<SP>1</SP> engages a cam surface 28<SP>1</SP> of a cam plate 27<SP>1</SP> fixed to the machine frame. The box 8 is moved from the casting position shown in Fig. 2 to the matrix removing position shown in Fig. 4 by upward movement of a piston rod 39 of a hydraulic actuator 40 which piston rod rocks an arm 38 on a shaft 36 clockwise, thereby causing arms, such as 33<SP>1</SP> journalled on shaft 32<SP>1</SP> to move to the right, the piston rod 39 being moved with the actuator 40 by a hydraulic actuator 46. When it is desired to change the matrix the box 8, guided by the cam surface 28<SP>1</SP>, is tilted into the Fig. 5 (not shown) position by further movement of the arms 33<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, by actuation of the rod 39 in the actuator 40. The box 8, Fig. 8 has a shaft 50<SP>1</SP> carrying an arm 511 provided with a clip 52<SP>1</SP> for clamping a matrix M. As the clip 52<SP>1</SP> is moved up or down by levers, not shown, it is caused to move in and out of clamping engagement with the matrix. The arm 51<SP>1</SP> is urged outwardly of the box 8 by a spring, not shown, so as to strip the matrix M from the plate P as the box 8 moves away from the core 9. The core 9 rests on brackets such as 63<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, pivoted to arms 65 and is supported by rollers 80 on the track 26. A link 81 pivotally connects the core to an arm 82 secured to a hollow shaft 37, rotatable on shaft 36, and also carrying an arm 83, Fig. 10, pivoted to the piston rod 84 of a hydraulic actuator 85. Outward movement of the rod 84 rocks the core 9 from the retracted position shown in Fig. 10 to the casting position shown in Fig. 2. A cast plate P, Fig. 10, is lifted from the core 9 by a lifter plate 88<SP>1</SP> forced upwardly by a bar 90 as the core 9 is retracted from casting position. A pusher arm 100, Fig. 11, rotated by a hydraulic actuator 101, Fig. 12 (not shown) and carried by a bracket 104 on a bar 105 then moves the plate P, Fig. 11, towards the finishing head 2. The bracket 104 is actuated by a doubleacting hydraulic actuator 120 which moves a chain 121 secured to the bracket 104. A limit switch 141 limits the movement of the arm 100 towards the head 2 by operating a valve, not shown, which reverses the flow of fluid pressure to the actuator 120. The plate P is cut and finished to the desired dimensions in the head 2. Power driven rollers, not shown, remove the plate to an inspection station 90, Fig. 1 (not shown). The plate P is then pushed manually to power driven rollers 300, Fig. 14, which convey the plate to a cooling station 3, the rollers 300 being started and stopped by the plate engaging and disengaging respectively a limit switch 340. Semi-circular plates 311 carrying brushes 313 are rocked upwardly by a shaft 310 to close off the ends of the plate P. Water pipes 314 having jets spray cooling water on to the plate, the plate being subsequently dried by air blown through a pipe 315. The machine may be controlled automatically by limit switchers and timers. Inadvertent operation of the machine, e.g., pumping molten metal through the funnel 4, Fig. 2, may be prevented by interlocking devices. Specification 650,752 is referred to.
