Divided out of 881,043 Class 89(3) [Also in Group XXIII] A compressed air nail-driving apparatus comprises a cylinder 101 housing a slidable driving piston 102 in which compressed air is admitted to the cylinder to effect the driving motion of the piston by means of a main inlet valve 135 operated by an auxiliary compressed air operated piston 123 controlled by a manually actuated control valve 119. The piston 102 carries a ram rod 145 which drives a nail 109 from a nozzle 111 into the workpiece. The ram rod 145 enters a tubular portion 110 of a cylinder foot 107 with a close fit and thereby prevents air from the chamber 143 of the cylinder 101 from being expelled through the nozzle, this air being forced by the piston 102 through openings 144 into an annular storage chamber 105. The piston 123 carries a stem 141 which during the driving stroke of the apparatus makes a pressure seal in a passage 140 so that the chamber 137 is cut off from an air vent 132. Upon release of the trigger 126, the valve 119 closes and the piston 123 returns to its upper position to close the valve 135 and vent the chamber 137 through the vent 132 so that compressed air stored in the chamber 105 can return the piston 102 to the upper end of the cylinder 101. As shown in Fig. 1, a connecting lever 128 associated with the trigger 126 is locked against operation by a stop 114 on the nozzle 111 and in order to release the lever 128 so that the trigger may be operated the nozzle 111 has to be pushed against the workpiece to cause the nozzle to slide axially against a spring 115 and thereby disengage the stop 114, (Fig. 2, not shown). A manually operated safety lever, (Fig. 3, not shown) may be provided for preventing actuation of the trigger 126. To retain the nail 109 in the nozzle 111, and to prevent it from entering the cylinder 101, springs 150, 151 respectively are provided. A spring loaded locking bolt 148 engages a groove 146<SP>1</SP> in a stem 146 on the piston 102 to releasably retain the piston at the upper end of the cylinder in readiness for a nailing operation.
