Class 72 [Also in Groups XII and XXX] A coil of material, such as strip metal, is supported on a turntable with an open top slot which extends from the outer to the inner periphery of a coil engaging member. As shown, a tight coil C rests on the edges of radial vanes 11 while its outer laps rest on supporting plates 12, 13, and 14. Opened topped slots 17, 18, and 19 are formed by channel sections 15 and 16, all the above resting on rotatably supported base plate 1. To transfer a coil, the lifter comprising cylinder 32, the outside diameter of which is slightly less than the inside diameter of the coil, radial arms 25, 26, and 27 and lifter struts 39 are lowered so that tube 32 enters the centre of the coil and tongues 33, 34 and 35 interengage with mandrel sections 7, 8 and 9, the tube coming to rest when shoulders on these tongues engage the top face of plate 1. Lifter beams 43, 44 and 45 are then inserted through holes 42 in plates 41 on struts 39 and penetrate through holes 36 in tongues 33, 34, 35, being stopped by the engagement of projections 46 with plates 41. The coil can now be lifted by means of eye 30. A coil may be opened by the method disclosed in Specification 878,497 and transferred by the lifter into a furnace similar to the type disclosed in the earlier Specification, provision being made so that beams 43, 44 and 45 may be removed, the coil alone, without any part of the lifting equipment, being heated in the furnace. In a modification, the three arms 25, 26, and 27 may be replaced by two or even a single arm and corresponding lifting beam.
