Abstract

878,337. Discharge apparatus; thermonuclear apparatus. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. June 13, 1960 [June 23, 1959], No. 20649/60. Classes 39(1) and 39(4). In a plasma injection device for plasma confining apparatus e.g. a thermonuclear fusion reactor, the plasma is formed by mixing ions of high energy and electrons together before injection into the plasma confining apparatus, the ions and electrons forming two coaxial beams and at least one of the beams being deflected towards the other beam. As shown electrons 20 from an annular gun 14, 15 are converged into an ion beam which is generated in an ion source including a cathode 3, an anode 6 and an extraction electrode 7, Focusing windings 11, 12 and 13 are provided and the electron gun is shielded by a magnetic screen 18 which also acts as an anode. The; plasma confining apparatus 24 is surrounded at its ends by windings 25 forming magnetic mirrors. In a modification the electron beam is of rectilinear tubular form and the ions are diverged into the electron beam, or the electron beam may pass through the inside of the ion beam and either the electron beam diverged into the ion beam or the ion beam. converged into the electron beam. The velocities of the ion and electron beams are of the same order of magnitude, but are not exactly in synchronism in order to avoid recombination effects.
