Abstract
877,975. Contacting a liquid with a gas or vapour. SOC. LE CARBONE-LORRAINE, and HILLIARD, A. Feb. 26, 1960 [March 10, 1959], No. 8217/59. Class 55 (2). Apparatus for contacting a liquid with a gas or vapour comprises blocks 10 (Fig. 1), with holes 11 therethrough for the passage of liquid and gas or vapour and arranged in a self - supporting stack, a continuous coating of a chemically inert synthetic resinous material impermeable to the liquid and gas or vapour being applied around the outside of the stack of blocks. As shown, the blocks 10 are clamped between upper and lower plates 12 and 15 associated respectively with a gas or vapour outlet/liquid inlet element 13 and a gas or vapour inlet/liquid outlet element 14. The blocks 10 may be cemented together or separated by peripheral elastic gaskets. Preferably the blocks individually or as a stock are coated or provided with a wrapping of a material, e.g. polytetrafluorethylene, impervious to the coating of synthetic resinous material. A layer of a material such as asbestos or glass fibre may separate the inner and outer coatings and be spaced from the inner coating. The coating of synthetic resinous material may be applied by wrapping a sheet material around the blocks and/or by applying a fluid material which sets to a solid mass. The blocks 10. may be of carbon or unglazed ceramic material and may be a single block or an assembly of a number of sub-blocks such as are shown in Fig. 4. The upper and lower surface of the blocks are dished to provide chambers 28 between adjacent blocks.
