Abstract
Halosilanes are purified by contact with a solid complexing agent having a general formula: AaBbOc.XH2O wherein A is Na, K, H, Mg, Ag, Pb, Ca, Sr, Ba, Cd, Zn, Mn, Co, NH4, Ni, Ce, or Cu; B is hexavalents Mo, W, U, Nb, or Ta or pentavalent V; a, b and c are positive whole numbers of such values that the positive valence of (Aa) is equal to the negative valence of (BbOc) and wherein X varies from 0 to 24 and subsequent separation of the halosilane from the formed complex and remaining complexing agent. Halosilanes, e.g. trichlorosilane or silicon tetrachloride, are contacted with 0.025-30 gms/litre of complexing agent and the mixture distilled to isolate the purified halosilane. The isolated halosilane may be caused to recycle to the distillation step to afford complete contact with the complexing agent, the purified halosilane being bled off from the recycle line. Alternatively, the mixture may be vigorously shaken and the halosilane recovered by crystallisation or distillation. The complexing agent may have a m.pt. above 600 DEG C. Specific agents, (NH4)2MoO4, (NH4)6Mo7O24, 4H2O, (NH4)2W4O13,8H2O, (NH4)6W7O24, 6H2O, NH4VO3, BaMoO4, BaWO13,9H2O, Ba2U2O7, COWO4, CaHoO4, CaWO4, Ce2 (MoO4)3, Ce2(WO4)3, PbMoO4, PbWO4, K2MoO4, K2WO4:2H2O, K2W4O13,8H2O, K6W7O24,6H2O, KUO4, Ag2WO4 Na2MoO4, Na2MoO4,2H2O, Na2Mo2O7, Na2 Mo3O10, 7H2O, Na2Mo4O13,6H2O, Na2Mo8O25,4H2O, Na2Mo10O13,12H2O, Na2WO4, Na6W7O24, 16H2O, Na2UO4, Na3VO4,16H2O, Na4V2O7, SrMoO4, SrWO4 and particularly Na2WO4, 2H2O are referred to.
