Abstract

876,937. Rigid laminates. VICTOR MANUFACTURING & GASKET CO. June 12, 1958 [Aug. 16, 1957], No. 18854/58. Class 140. [Also in Group XXVI] Laminated material suitable for making gaskets for internal combustion engine cylinders comprises a metal plate, for example, of steel or tin-plated steel, formed with hollow projections 20, 21, Fig. 5, covered with elastomeric material secured by adhesion. The projections are in rows, preferably staggered, those in successive rows being formed in opposite sides of the plate as at 11, 13, Fig. 2; they may be stabbed through at their apices, in which case the layers of elastomeric material 15, 16 are bonded together through the apertures. The elastomeric material preferably comprises an inert or heat-conducting filler such as asbestos fibres, metal powder, or barytes, bonded with an elastomer, preferably a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, but alternatives are polychloroprene, polybutadiene-styrene, poly-tetrafluoro- or -trifluorethylene, or a polyacrylic, siloxane, or epoxy resin. The elastomeric material may be applied as separate layers or as a dough, being consolidated subsequently by passing through heated calendar rolls. A thermosetting, preferably phenolic-based adhesive is used. In the case of curable materials, curing may be completed by engine heat during use of the product as a cylinder gasket. For such use the product is coated with a graphite or other composition non-adherent to the cylinder and head, and is normally cut to shape without edge-sealing, but sealing rings may be fitted around the combustion openings, the elastomeric material being reduced in thickness to accommodate them. The metal core, and the metal powder filler if provided are stated to assist diffusion of engine heat. Specification 876,936 is referred to.
