Abstract

Mono-epoxy compounds are polymerized using as catalyst a mixture of a compound of the formula M(OR)xRy(Hal)z and a metal halide in which the metal is different from M, where M is a metal of Group 2 or 3 of the Periodic Table, R is an alkyl or aryl group, y is an integer, x and z are integers or zero, and x+y+z equals the valency of M. The epoxy compounds are defined as having the formula: <FORM:0876648/IV (a)/1> where R1 and R11 are each a hydrogen atom or hydrocarbon radical, R111 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon, halohydrocarbon, aryloxyalkyl, alkylaryloxyalkyl or haloaryloxyalkyl radical, and R1 or R11 may be joined to R111 to form a cycloaliphatic ring. Specified compounds are ethylene, propylene, styrene and cyclohexene oxides, and phenyl, chlorophenyl, tolyl and naphthyl glycidyl ethers. Copolymers and block copolymers are included. Examples of the first group of catalysts are aluminium triethyl, triisobutyl, diethyl chloride, ethyl dichloride, ethyl diethoxide and ethyl ethoxy chloride; zinc ethyl ethoxide, ethyl chloride and diethyl; and magnesium di-isobutyl, ethyl isopropoxide and ethyl chloride. Suitable metal halides are cupric, magnesium, zinc, ferric, aluminium, titanium and stannic chlorides. Solvents may be used, and temperatures may range from 0 DEG -200 DEG C. and pressures from 1-40 atmospheres. Polymers of styrene oxide or cyclohexene oxide may be freed from catalyst by treating with alcohol, washing with dil. HCl and with water, extracting with benzene and distilling. Other polymers may be purified by distilling off excess monomer and extracting with benzene from which they are precipitated by petroleum ether. Polymers having molecular weights above 20,000 can be obtained and they are useful as thickening agents or, in the case of ethylene oxide, as water-soluble films.ALSO:A catalyst for the polymerisation of epoxy compounds comprises a mixture of a compound of the formula M(OR)xRy(Hal)z and a metal halide in which the metal is different from M, where M is a metal of Group 2 or 3 of the Periodic Table, R is an alkyl or aryl group, y is an integer, x and z are integers or zero, and x+y+z equals the valency of M. Examples of the first group of catalysts are aluminium triethyl, tri-isobutyl, diethyl chloride, ethyl dichloride, ethyl diethoxide and ethyl ethoxy chloride; zinc ethyl ethoxide, ethyl chloride and diethyl; and magnesium di-isobutyl, ethyl isopropoxide and ethyl chloride. Suitable metal halides are cupric, magnesium, zinc, ferric, aluminium, titanium and stannic chlorides.
