Abstract

876,593. Shaft couplings shafts; machinery guards. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. July 7, 1959 [July 8, 1958], No. 21781/58. Classes 80 (2) and 80 (4). In a telescopic propeller shaft for use between an agricultural tractor and a trailer implement, wherein inner and outer tubes 1, 2 are drivingly connected to Hooke's joint forks 4, 3 respectively, longitudinal, re-entrant portions 5, 6 engaging each other are formed in the walls of the inner and outer tubes to enable the shaft to transmit torque whilst accommodating variation in its length. The tubes are fabricated from strip material welded along the centre of one of the re-entrant portions of each tube. The welds are arranged in portions engaging each other, weld flash occurring at 8, 9 respectively of the outer and inner tubes. The innermost sections of the re-entrant portions 5, 6 are arranged to clear each other, those of the portions 6 being flattened, thereby accommodating the weld flash at 8. A circular reinforcing tube 12 is welded around the free end of the outer tube 2 as shown, or may extend over the greater part of the outer tube length. The re-entrant portions extend the entire length of the tubes to tightly engage corresponding recesses 10 formed in the forks. To ensure correct phasing of the forks 4, 3, the re-entrant portions of each tube are not equi-spaced about the axis of the tubes. A surrounding, fixed telescopic guard comprising inner and outer tubes 14, 15 spot-welded to flared sections 16, 17 is supported by bearings, the balls of which engage the sections 16, 17 and inner races 21 mounted around the outer ends of the tubes 1, 2, bearing cages 19 being fixed to the sections 16, 17. The outer joint forks 23, 24 are splined to their corresponding shafts and are releasably axially locked thereto by spring- loaded transverse pins 26. The propeller shaft may be provided with a torque limiting clutch, such as that described in Specification 876,592, arranged at the side of one of the joints remote from the shaft 1, 2.
