Abstract
An ethylene polymerization catalyst comprises an organo-aluminium compound AlR3(R=alkyl, e.g. Et, Pr or i-Bu) and a vanadyl salt of a carboxylic acid, in the preferred molar ratio of 1-10 : 1, particularly 3 : 1. The vanadyl group is attached to two carboxyl groups which may be derived from two molecules of (the same or different) mono- or di-carboxylic acid, or from a single molecule of dicarboxylic acid; the preferred types of such acids are alkyl or alkenyl monocarboxylic acids having at least 2 C atoms, alkylene dicarboxylic acids with at least 1 C atom separating the carboxyl groups, and phenyl mono- and phenylene di-carboxylic acids. Specified vanadyl salts are the acetate, propionate, 2-ethylhexanoate, 2-ethylbutyrate, adipate, benzoate and maleate. The acetate is prepared from V2O5 with acetic acid and anhydride, while the other vanadyl salts are prepared from the acetate and the appropriate carboxylic acid; experimental details are given of the preparation of vanadyl acetate, adipate and benzoate. The catalyst composition is used as a dispersion or solution in an inert hydrocarbon liquid such as heptane, octane, benzene or toluene.ALSO:Vanadyl salts of carboxylic acids, wherein the vanadyl group is attached to two carboxyl groups which may be derived from two molecules or one or two mono- or dicarboxylic acids or from a single molecule of dicarboxylic acid, are prepared by reacting V2O5 with acetic acid and acetic anhyddride yielding vanadyl acetate which may be reacted with an appropriate carboxylic acid or acids to obtain a different desired vanadyl carboxylate. Propionic, 2-ethyl hexanoic, 2-ethyl butyric, adipic, benzoic and maleic acids are mentioned. The salts are used in catalysts for polymerising ethylene (see Group IV(a)).ALSO:An ethylene polymerisation catalyst comprises an organo-aluminium compound AlR3(R=alkyl, e.g. Et,Pr or i-Bu) and a vanadyl salt of a carboxylic acid, in the preferred molar ratio of 1-10 : 1, particularly 3 : 1.
