Abstract

876,119. Electric capacitors. BOSCH G.m.b.H., ROBERT. March 4, 1958 [March 16, 1957], No. 6854/58. Class 37. A self-sealing electric capacitor comprises vapour deposited, metallized layers on an impregnated paper base between two layers impermeable to the impregnant. At least one plate may have part surfaces connected by way of fusible bridges such that only the area of the plates enclosing the fusible bridges is protected by a protective layer from the action of the impregnant, which may be a chlorinated diphenyl normally leaving conductive residues on breakdown of the insulation. In an embodiment of the first type paper strips 10, Fig. 1, carry metal plates 11, paper strips 12 separating strips 10, between which are impregnants 13. The metal plates 11 are not directly vapourdeposited on to strips 10 but are sandwiched between two thin protective layers 14, 15 impermeable to the passage of the impregnant. A lacquer, e.g. nitrocellulose, ethylcellulose, or acetyl-cellulose, with melamine resin, or selfsupporting foils of polyethylene, or polyethylene glycol terephthalate are specified. In the event of a breakdown through the insulating layers 10, 12, 14, 15, conducting decomposition products of impregnant 13 may be produced in the voltaic arc 16. Zones 17 sufficiently insulate the conductive portion of the passage formed by the burning away of the plates. In a second embodiment, one of the plates is divided into equal areas 201, Fig. 3, each conductively connected to the margin 200 by a fusible bridge 202, this patterned plate extending over one face of the condenser and the unpatterned plate over the other, as far as the extreme edge of the insulating strips 22 and 23, Fig. 2, respectively. On these strips contact bridges 24, 25 for the attachment of plates 20, 21 are sprayed. A non-metallized layer 26, between plates 20, 21 is impregnated with a chlorinated diphenyl except where the fusible bridges 202 extend at the marginal zone 27. In the marginal zone the condenser is impregnated with e.g. a polyester resin or polyurethane, or sulphur, which do not dissolve in a chlorinated diphenyl. In the event of a breakdown between plates 20, 21, or 28, Fig. 2, a short circuit is formed between the plates, but the bridge of plate 20 in protected zone 27 is melted and thus the breakdown point is isolated.
