Abstract
876,104. Crimping fibres and finishing yarns. CHEMSTRAND CORPORATION. Sept. 1, 1959 [Sept. 4, 1958], No. 29821/59. Class 120(3) Single or plied multifilament acrylonitrile polymer (i.e. polymers, copolymers and interpolymers containing at least 70% by weight of acrylonitrile in polymerized form and blends thereof with: blending polymers preferably containing acrylonitrile) yarn (or tow) is textured by stretching at a stretch ratio of 1À1 to 3À0 while heating to a temperature above the second order transition temperature of the acrylonitrile polymer, to produce a dimensionally unstable yarn, concurrently inserting twist, cooling to set such twist and untwisting to remove the twist, and, prior or subsequent to plying and/or forming the yarn into knitted, woven or tufted fabrics, heating at a temperature, e.g. at least 160‹F. wet and 200‹F. dry, and for a period e.g. six minutes, sufficient to relax, shrink and develop crimp in the yarn &c. with dimensional stability. As shown in Fig. 1, yarn or tow 2 is drawn from a package 3 by rolls 4, through heating means 5 e.g. a steam tube or chamber or a steam-or electricallyheated metal block, and false-twist spindle 6, forwarded by stretching rolls 7 rotating at higher peripheral speed than rollers 4, thence through heat-relaxing means 8 e.g. aqueous bath or steam chamber, as a running yarn or in skeins, to takeup rolls 9 and winding means 10. In an alternative process, the yarn is formed into fabric at 18 and relaxed as part of conventional finishing e.g. dyeing, scouring, at 20, or separately therefrom. In the relaxing apparatus shown in Fig. 2, yarn 2 emerging from rolls 7 is distributed by a piddler 12 on to a belt 13 which conveys it past infra-red heat lamps 15, or a dry oven or steam chamber (not shown) to take-up rolls 16.
