875,620. Stuffing-box substitutes; pistons. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. April 22, 1959 [May 19, 1958], No. 13781/59. Addition to 853,996. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A packing for use between a piston or piston rod and cylinder comprises a resilient operative portion 1 which is secured, such as by vulcanization, to an annular metal-reinforcing member 2 and consists of a sleeve portion having at one side of the member 2 a radial extension provided with a tapered sealing lip 9 stressed for relative sliding engagement with the cylinder, piston or piston rod as the case may be, the thickness of the sleeve portion being less than the average thickness of the lip and the contact sealing surface of the lip and adjacent portion of the radial extension being arranged to bear continuously against the members with which they coact over the entire axial length of the surface. As shown in Fig. 3, the radial extension has two tapered lips 8, 9 divergent in their free state so as to be stressed when in use. In order to prevent the resilient material of the packing, when subjected to fluid pressure in the direction of the arrow 51, from being compressed towards the lip 9 and thereby increasing the frictional resistance of the lip, the face 55 of the member 2 is formed as a frusto-conical plane surface; for the same reason, the thickness of the sleeve portion is reduced at its end 57, a similar reduction in thickness being made at the end 58 to reinforce the connection between the sleeve portion and member 2. A single annular groove 59 in the sleeve portion serves as a reservoir for lubricant. When applied on a single-acting piston, the resilient member 1 is provided with an enlarged extension 18, Fig. 6, to engage in a corresponding groove in the piston, and a buffer projection 22 may be provided between the lips 8, 9. For double-acting pistons, the radial extension may extend inwardly on both sides of the support member as shown in Fig. 9. In other constructions, the support member is of L-shape and two packing devices of the form described may be disposed side by side in a cylinder or on a piston.
