Abstract

874,602. Polyurethane coatings. LINTAFOAM INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 14, 1960 [March 16, 1959], No. 9029/59. Class 140. A process for the application of a foam backing to sheet material comprises depositing on the back of said material, in a series of parallel substantially contiguous stripes, a polyurethane foam reaction mixture at a rate of 15 to 100 grams per square foot of sheet material. The stripes may be smoothed and fusion thereof facilitated by passage under a doctor device before substantial foaming occurs. The stripes may be about ¢ inch in width. The sheet material may be moved forward step by step, the stripe being laid transversely of the sheet material in the interval between successive steps by transverse reciprocation of a nozzle, which may be attached directly to a foam mixer, over the path of the sheet material, the steps being approximately equal in extent to the width of the stripes. As shown, mixer 4 mounted on carriage 3 is reciprocated on rails 2 transversely of path 1 of the sheet material to be coated. The sheet material is carried under nozzle 6 by belt 7 which is raised to an apex by roller 8 underneath the nozzle so that the polyurethane mixture discharged at a constant rate by the nozzle tends to spread. The coated sheet material passed under doctor block 9 around which endless band 10 of polythene sheet or release paper is fed at a speed equal to that of the sheet material along path 1 to smooth off stripes so as to produce a substantially uniform backing. The coated sheet material is then cured in an oven. The sheet material may be textiles, carpets, cardboard, paper, leather, leather board, or polyvinyl chloride or other plastic sheet material.
