Abstract

874,601. Wind motors; centrifugal governors. GARRETT CORPORATION. April 11, 1958 [April 11, 1957], No. 11679/58. Classes 57 and 110 (3). The means for adjusting in unison the pitch of turbine blades, each of which is mounted on a rotor in a manner allowing the blade to rotate about an axis extending along its length but preventing movement along this axis comprises a flyweight whose centre of gravity moves away from the axis of the rotor against a restraint as the rotor rotates and which transmits movement to the blades through a cam and camfollower. Preferably there are two flyweights and the restraint is a torsion bar. The two blades 18 (Fig. 1) of a windmotor are rotatably mounted in the front portion 20 of the rotor frame 17 and have gear portions 42 meshed with a crown wheel 43 which is mounted in bearings 44 in the frame and carries a cam 47. Flyweights 55 are pivoted on diametrically opposite shafts 54 (Fig. 3) on the portion 20 and carry rollers 56 engaging the cam. The rear portion 21 of the frame comprises a hollow shaft 22 journalled in bearings 16 in the fixed casing of the driven member 11, e.g. an electric generator, and a torsion bar 50 coaxial with the shaft is splined at opposite ends to the cam 47 and to the shaft. The two portions of the frame are secured together by screws 25 passing through arcuate slots in the rear portion and may be relatively angularly adjusted, to preload the torsion bar, by means of tangential set-screws 52 on the portion 20 which abut lugs 51 on the portion 21. When the flyweights swing outwardly they cause the cam to rotate against the torsion of the bar and the crownwheel 43 to turn the blades 18 towards a feathered position. Set-screws 58 limit the outward movement of the flyweights.
